After mustering up the courage to propose to a girl in an online game, naive otaku Hideki "Rusian" Nishimura is devastated when she flat-out rejects him. To make matters worse, the girl reveals that she is actually an older man in real life. With his dreams crushed and his heart broken, Rusian comes to an abrupt decision in the midst of his raging fit: he will never trust another girl in an online game again. Years later, Rusian is now in a guild with three other players, one of whom possesses a female avatar by the name of Ako. Ako is deeply in love with Rusian and wants to marry him. Although he entertains the possibility that she might be a guy, Rusian accepts her proposal, claiming that her gender does not matter as long as she is cute in-game. Gambling on a light novel adaptation is always risky business, but one of these days it’s going to pay off. Well, maybe next season. Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta? is about a nondescript guy that plays too much of a free-to-play MMO and who is traumatized that a character he proposed to marry in the game turned him down because the player behind her is “an older man”. This leads him to deny any connection between game and reality, but it turns out that the character he did marry is actually played by his nerdy classmate Ako, who has a very sketchy idea of reality to begin with and simply equates him with his toon. Oh, and everyone else in his guild is a cute girl schoolmate of his as well, including the original trauma-inducing catgirl, who merely double-pretended to be a guy and is actually his MILF teacher. Here’s what I had to say back when Netoge was surprising: Remember the other generic light novel, the one where some otaku turd doesn’t bumble into a fantasy universe but gets a harem delivered to him in his own high school instead?
